Our History

The Wicomico Hunt has enjoyed the centuries-old sport of “riding to hounds” on horseback on the DelMarVa peninsula since the 1920’s, when it was organized by a group of Salisbury men.  The club was formally recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America in 1929.  Interest in revitalizing the Wicomico Hunt Club was kindled in the mid 1960’s by a group including, among others, Hamilton P. Fox, Charles Habliston, Robert L. Williams and Kelvin Adkins.  Mr. Fox and Mr. Williams shared the Joint-Mastership of the Hunt from this time through the 1981-1982 season.  Under their Mastership, the Hunt was recognized by the MFHA during the 1975-1976 season.

Today, the Wicomico Hunt is the only remaining hunt sanctioned by the Masters of Foxhounds Association that is located on the DelMarVa peninsula.  Without the generosity and support of the many land owners, farmers and State agencies in Delaware and Maryland that allow us to hunt
their lands, we would be unable to continue this age old tradition of mounted fox chasing.  We sincerely thank you and are truly in debt to all of you.

Organized hunts are held every Wednesday and Sunday from Opening Day (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) through the end of March, with cub hunting in October and November occurring at the discretion of the Masters and Huntsman, prior to Opening Day.

As we approach the 2011-2012 season, we look forward to another exciting season of mounted fox chasing, continuing the great traditions established and nurtured by those who have hunted with Wicomico over the many years since it began hunting in the 1920's.  To those who have not yet discovered the fun and camaraderie of fox chasing, but who appreciate the special relationship between horse and rider, we extend a sincere invitation to contact one of the joint masters to discuss the details of your participation in our sport.

Our Other Activities:

Wicomico Hunt does more than foxhunt! In addition to mounted fox-chasing, the Wicomico Hunt has many varied activities throughout the year, such as trail riding in the off-season, the blessing of the hounds before Opening Hunt, hunt breakfasts, the Annual Hunt Ball and almost monthly meetings at members' homes to discuss business and enjoy the company of like-minded equestrians.

Here's an explanation of some of our activities:

Trail  & Beach Rides - After the hunt season is over at the end of March, members continue trail riding on Wednesday mornings until the weather gets too hot or the bugs get too bad. When season permits, we often organize beach rides at local beaches.

Cross Country Schooling - We offer cross country schooling on specific evenings in the summer. This is an opportunity to ride outside of a ring and school over jumps.  There are 3 levels of jumps, ranging from 1 foot to 3
feet.  The final cross country school of the season includes a Mock Hunt, where riders form 2 groups, jumping and non-jumping, and get a chance to see what hunting in a group is like.  This is a great chance to bring green horses out in a group for the first time. Cross Country Schooling is usually organized by one of our members at a private farm. Stay tuned for more and check back for dates!

Open & Junior Hunts  - Open hunts are held during the season, where anyone can come and ride without a cap fee, in English or Western tack and traditional attire is not necessary.  Junior riders are invited to hunt without a cap fee at designated monthly Junior Hunts.
